Member of Parliament for Akwapem North, Sammi Awuku, has launched a scathing critique of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), accusing the government of focusing more on public relations than on improving the lives of ordinary Ghanaians.
In an interview, Mr. Awuku said the government’s policies have failed to ease the economic burden on citizens, despite flashy announcements and media campaigns.
“Ghanaians are not feeling the impact of these so-called policies. What they are experiencing instead is worsening economic hardship,” he stated.
Citing recent increases in utility tariffs and the introduction of a GH¢1 Fuel Levy, he argued that the government’s decisions are out of touch with the realities facing most households.
“Electricity tariffs rose by 11% in 2024, and just this July, they went up again by over 17%. Water tariffs have also jumped by 6%. These increases show a serious disconnect between the government’s rhetoric and the suffering of the people,” he said.
Mr. Awuku also dismissed the government’s claim that it had scrapped fuel allocations for public officials, describing it as a hollow gesture meant to score political points.
“This government has become one of public relations, optics, and showmanship, they announce the end of fuel allocations, yet fuel depots at Jubilee House and Osu Castle continue to serve individuals, including some from National Security, who shouldn’t even be benefiting,” he said.
He concluded by accusing the administration of hypocrisy in its approach to austerity: “Ghanaians are being told to tighten their belts, while the government is wearing elastic around its waist”.
