Gov’t begins peak-hour bus boost on key Accra routes

The Ministry of Transport has begun rolling out an emergency bus support initiative across four major corridors in Accra to ease the daily frustration commuters face during the evening rush.

Many residents have long complained about the stressful scramble for transport after work, with long queues, inflated fares and long waits becoming a routine ordeal.

Transport Minister Joseph Nikpe Bukari announced the intervention on Tuesday, saying it forms part of a swift response to the growing concerns about unreliable transport during peak hours.

The deployment starts December 10, 2025.

Under the plan, the Ministry, in collaboration with Intercity STC Coaches Limited, will redirect long-distance buses that return early to Accra so they can serve key inner city routes where demand is highest.

The Minister said the government wants to give commuters a safer and more predictable way to get home after work.

“We will ensure that those buses are available at the peak hours to support our commuters who close from work to get home safely,” he told journalists.

Each of the four selected corridors will receive at least eight buses between 4:30 in the evening and 8:30 at night.

The designated routes are Accra to Madina and Adenta, Accra to Achimota and Amasaman, Accra to Mallam and Kasoa, and Accra to Tema Beach Road.

Bukari noted that the initiative is expected to grow in the coming weeks as more buses are added, with the broader aim of reducing the pressure on commuters and curbing fare hikes by some commercial drivers.

The Ministry views this rollout as an interim measure while long-term reforms to improve the entire urban transport system are considered.
